Taxonomy
Shinisaurus was named by Ahl (1930). It is extant. It is the type genus of Shinisauridae. It was considered monophyletic by Lee and Caldwell (2000).

It was assigned to Shinisaurinae by McDowell and Bogert (1954); to Xenosauridae by Frank and Ramus (1996) and Lee and Caldwell (2000); and to Shinisauridae by Conrad (2006).
