Anshunsaurus was named by Liu (1999). Its type is Anshunsaurus huangguoshuensis.
It was assigned to Thalattosauria by Wang et al. (2008); and to Askeptosauridae by Müller (2007), Liu (2007), Wu et al. (2009).
