It was synonymized subjectively with Pelagornithidae by Olson (1985), González-Barba et al. (2002).
It was assigned to Pelecanoidae by Hay (1930); to Pelecanoidea by Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Wetmore (1960); and to Pelecaniformes by Wemore (1928), Lambrecht (1933), Howard (1972).
