Lapillopsis was named by Warren and Hutchinson (1990). Its type is Lapillopsis nana. It is the type genus of Lapillopsidae.
It was assigned to Micropholidae by Warren and Hutchinson (1990); to Lapillopsidae by Yates (1999), Schoch and Milner (2000); to Stereospondyli by Yates and Warren (2000); and to Lydekkerinidae by Poropat et al. (2023).
