Labeceras was named by Spath (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l K Albi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Labeceratidae.

It was assigned to Hamitidae by Whitehouse (1926); to Labeceratinae by Förster (1975); to Labeceratidae by Henderson (1990); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
