Metaptychoceras was named by Spath (1926) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo-u]. Its type is Ptychoceras smithi.

It was assigned to Hamitidae by Wright (1979), Kennedy and Cobban (1990); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
