Pteroscaphites was named by Wright (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u K Sant-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1107].

It was assigned to Scaphitinae by Wright et al. (1996); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).

Wright et al. 1996Very small; whorl section depressed, coronate, the lateral angles prolonged onto body chamber; aperture with sides and ventral edge normally pinched to form projecting points; ribs prorsiradiate on inner flanks, turning back at the lateral angle. Dimorphic in fashion comparable to that of Scaphites and Clioscaphites and therefore not microconchs of those genera; probably a series of progenetic dwarf offshoots of successive species of Scaphites and Clioscaphites
