Stenotosaurus was named by Romer (1947). It is not extant.

It was assigned to Capitosauridae by Ingavat and Janvier (1981) and Kamphausen (1983); to Stenotosaurinae by Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Mastodonsauridae by Damiani (2001).
