Pteranodontinae was named by Williston (1892). Its type is Pteranodon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ornithocheirinae by Kuhn (1946).

It was assigned to Pteranodontidae by Hay (1930); and to Ornithocheiridae by Kuhn (1966).
