Taxonomy
Modiolus gigantus was named by Li et al. (1982). Its type specimen is Nanjing Inst Geol Min Res HI-2551, a valve (Left valve, internal mold), and it is a mold. Its type locality is Funiushan, undivided Upper Permian, Zhenjiang City, which is in a Lopingian marine horizon in China.
