Harpes valcourensis was named by Shaw (1968) [Includes specimens identified as Harpina antiquatus Billings, Eoharpes antiquatus (Billings), Harpes (Eoharpes) antiquatus (Billings), Harpina ottawaensis Billings, and Eoharpes ottawaensis (Billings) in Raymond (1905) and Raymond (1910) but NOT type specimens of Harpes antiquatus Billings and Harpes ottawaensis Billings]. Its type specimen is NYSM 12293, a cephalon/head, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Hibbertia valcourensis by Shaw (1968), Ebach and McNamara (2002).
