Macalia was named by Adams (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Macominae by Vokes (1980); to Tellinidae by Lamprell and Whitehead (1992); and to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002).
