Megalodon was named by Sowerby (1827) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov Tr u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066
NOTE: There might be a fish genus by Agassiz with this name, too.]. Its type is Megalodon cucullatus.
It was assigned to Hippuritoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Megalodontidae by Kiessling (2003) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
