Paleoamblypygi was named by Weygoldt (1996). It is extant.

It was assigned to Amblypygi by Dunlop et al. (2013), Engel and Grimaldi (2014), Garwood et al. (2017), Dunlop (2018), Prendini (2025).

Synonyms

Libellula carbonaria was named by Scudder (1876). It is an impression. Its type locality is Cossett's Pit, Sydney coalfield, Cape Breton, which is in a Westphalian C/Westphalian D terrestrial shale in Canada. It is the type species of Graeophonus.

It was recombined as Graeophonus carbonarius by Scudder (1890), Petrunkevitch (1913), Petrunkevitch (1953), Dunlop et al. (2013); it was considered a nomen dubium by Scudder (1885), Dunlop (2018), Prendini (2025).
Graeophonus was named by Scudder (1890). Its type is Libellula carbonaria.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Dunlop (2018), Prendini (2025).

It was assigned to Paracharontidae by Dunlop et al. (2013), Engel and Grimaldi (2014); and to Paleoamblypygi by Garwood et al. (2017).
Paracharontoidea was named by Weygoldt (1996). It is extant.

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Paleoamblypygi by Garwood et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Paleoamblypygi by Engel and Grimaldi (2014).
