Trypaea was named by Dana (1852). It is extant. Its type is Trypaea australiensis.

It was assigned to Callianassinae by Manning and Felder (1991), Karasawa (1993); and to Callianassidae by Schweitzer et al. (2010), Schweitzer et al. (2023).
