Coleia antiqua was named by Broderip (1835). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lyme Regis, Enniskillen collection, which is in a Sinemurian marine horizon in the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Coleia.
It was recombined as Eryon antiquus by Woodward (1866).
