Nephrops was named by Leach (1814) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Nephropidae, Nephropoidea.
It was assigned to Homaridae by Rathbun (1935); to Nephropinae by Feldmann and Holland (1971); to Decapoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Nephropidae by Tshudy and Sorhannus (2000), Schweitzer et al. (2010), Feldmann et al. (2016).
