Sula loxostyla was named by Cope (1870) [The type locality of Sula loxostyla is unknown. (Case, 1904; Whetmore, 1926).]. Its type specimen is humerus, a limb element, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Moris loxostyla by Wetmore (1926), Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940); it was recombined as Morus loxostyla by Wetmore (1956); it was recombined as Morus loxostylus by Olson and Rasmussen (2001).
