Phanomys mixtus

Osteichthyes - Rodentia - Eocardiidae

Taxonomy
Phanomys mixtus was named by Ameghino (1887) [Pérez and Vucetich (2012) considered MACN A 11302 to be the lectotype, but it was apparently not part of the original type series (and therefore cannot be a lectotype). Wood and Patterson (1959) previously allocated MACN A 2022, nine isolated teeth, as the neosyntype.]. Its type specimen is MACN A 11302, a maxilla (right maxillary fragment with P4-M2), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Barrancas del Río Santa Cruz, which is in a Santacrucian terrestrial horizon in the Santa Cruz Formation of Argentina. It is the type species of Phanomys.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
A. G. Kramarz 2006The largest species of the genus, cheek teeth almost 50% larger than in P. vetulus.
M. E. Pérez and M. G. Vucetich 2011All characters mentioned in the diagnosis of Phanomys are present in P. mixtus. This species differs from P. vetulus in its larger size.
