Pharellidae was named by Stoliczka (1870). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Pharellinae by Bouchet et al. (2010), Carter et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Tellinoidea by Nevesskaja (2009); to Pharidae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Solenidae by Carter et al. (2011).
