Taxonomy
Leptolepis macrophthalmus was named by Egerton (1853). Its type specimen is BMNH P.575-6, P.3677 and is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Christian Malford, which is in a Callovian offshore mudstone in the Oxford Clay Formation of the United Kingdom.
