Pecten inaequalis was named by Sowerby (1850) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Lectotype used for type specimen.]. Its type specimen is BMNH LL11354, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Pecten (Aequipecten) inaequalis by Dall (1898); it was recombined as Chlamys inaequalis by Woodring (1925); it was recombined as Aequipecten inaequalis by Pflug (1961); it was recombined as Argopecten inaequalis by Waller (2011).
