Taxonomy
Brevitricolpites variabilis was named by González-Guzmán (1967). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Slide F-III-20-564 (Catatumbo). Loc: X (micr. P0-58), a seed repro (Pollen grain), and it is a 3D fossil preserving soft parts. It is the type species of Brevitricolpites.

González-Guzmán 1967Pollen grains tricolpate to tricolporate, spheroidal; furrow C α 2, C β 1, C γ 2; sculpture of holotype is clavate to gemmate with the structural elements up to 0.05 μ high and 0.75 μ long. Thickness of the exine 1.5 μ (incl. sculpture elements); intectate? Furrows not clearly defined. Some grains with scabrateverrucate sculpture. Sometimes grains have 'colpi transversales', sometimes 'costae colpi'.
