Cyamodus tarnowitzensis was named by Gürich (1884). Its type specimen is LOST specimen and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Tarnowitz, which is in a Ladinian marine horizon in Poland.
It was synonymized subjectively with Cyamodus rostratus by Kuhn (1971).
