Pterodactylus giganteus

Taxonomy
Ornithocephalus giganteus was named by Bowerbank (1846). Its type specimen is BMNH 39412 (lectotype), a partial skeleton (Anterior portions of the rostrum and mandible, incomplete scapulocoracoid, proximal ends of the humerus and ulna, and a partial wing phalanx), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Culand Pits, Burham, which is in a Cenomanian/Turonian basinal (carbonate) chalk/marl in the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Lonchodraco.

It was recombined as Pterodactylus giganteus by Bowerbank (1846); it was recombined as Pterodactylus giganteus by Zittel (1890); it was recombined as Ornithocheirus giganteus by Charig (1967); it was recombined as Lonchodectes giganteus by Unwin (2001), Unwin (2003); it was recombined as Lonchodraco giganteus by Rodrigues and Kellner (2013).
