Costachonetes was named by Waterhouse (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-u P Sakm-u Sepkoski's reference number: 418,994]. Its type is Chonetes pygmaea.

It was assigned to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Caenanopliinae by Williams et al. (2000), Shen et al. (2017).
