Cymostrophia was named by Caster (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 24,38,538].

It was assigned to Strophomenacea by Kirk and Amsden (1952); to Stropheodontidae by Jones (1982); to Protodouvillininae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
