Taxonomy
Ammonites communis was named by Sowerby (1815). Its type specimen is BMNH 43895a, b and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Dactylioceras commune by Howarth (1962), Kutygin and Knyazev (2000), Devyatov et al. (2005).
