Carinagypa was named by Johnson and Ludvigsen (1973) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l D Emsi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 25].

It was assigned to Gypidulinae by Jones (1982), Williams et al. (2002); and to Pentamerida by Sepkoski (2002).
