Palaeophonus osborni
Taxonomy
Palaeophonus osborni was named by Whitfield (1885). Its type specimen is AMNH 2257, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Forge Hollow, Waterville, which is in a Pridoli lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Fiddlers Green Formation of New York.
It was recombined as Proscorpius osborni by Fritsch (1904), Petrunkevitch (1953), Kjellesvig-Waering (1966), Kjellesvig-Waering (1986) and Dunlop et al. (2013).
