Belemnites hastatus was named by Blainville (1808). It is the type species of Hibolites, Hibolithes.
It was recombined as Belemnopsis hastata by Douvillé (1916); it was recombined as Hibolites hastatus by Jeannet (1951); it was corrected as Belemnites hastati by Besairie and Collignon (1972); it was recombined as Hibolithes hastatus by Montfort (1808), Mutterlose and Wiedenroth (2008).
