Pecten invalidus was named by Hanna (1924). Its type specimen is CAS 8, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Pecten (Plagioctenium) invalidus by Jordan and Hertlein (1926); it was recombined as Pecten (Aequipecten) deserti invalidus by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Chlamys (Argopecten) invalida by Hertlein and Grant (1972); it was recombined as Argopecten invalidus by Moore (1984), Squires et al. (2006).
