Karbous was named by Havlíček (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 683,989]. Its type is Karbous aperinus.

It was assigned to Glassiidae by Williams et al. (2002); to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Karpinskiinae by Baarli and Mergl (2025).
