Glyptograptinae was named by Mitchell (1987). It was considered polyphyletic by Melchin et al. (2011).

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Axonophora by Melchin et al. (2011).

It was assigned to Monograptidae by Mitchell (1987), Toro (1995).
