Echinasterella was named by Stürtz (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l D u]. Its type is Echinasterella sladeni. It is the type genus of Palaechinasteridae.
It was assigned to Palasteriscidae by Schuchert (1915); to Palaechinasteridae by Lehmann (1957); to Helianthasteridae by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Hemizonida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stenuroidea by Blake (2013).
