Protarthraster was named by Spencer (1918) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeaster longimanus. It is the type genus of Protarthrasterinae.
It was assigned to Protarthrasterinae by Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966); to Uractinida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Asteroidea by Blake (2018).
