Prumnopitys opihiensis was named by Pole (1997). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is J38/f58, a cuticle. Its type locality is J38/f58 - Taratu Formation, which is in a Cretaceous/Eocene terrestrial coal in the Taratu Formation of New Zealand.
