Barycrinus was named by Meeke and Worthen (1868) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u C Vise-u]. It is not extant. Its type is Barycrinus spurius.

It was assigned to Botryocrinidae by McIntosh (1984); to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyathoformes by Wright (2017).
