Manicrinus was named by Frest and Strimple (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-u S Prid Sepkoski's reference number: 255]. Its type is Manicrinus hybocriniformis. It is the type genus of Manicrinidae.

It was assigned to Manicrinidae by Frest and Strimple (1978), Frest and Strimple (1982); to Cladida by Sepkoski (2002); to Eucladida by Wright (2017); and to Cyathoformes by Wright (2017).
