Icthyocrinus was named by Conrad (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-l D Sieg]. It is the type genus of Icthyocrinidae, Icthyocrinacea.

It was corrected as Ichthyocrinus by Whitfield (1893), Wright and Toom (2017).

It was assigned to Cyathocrinidae by Whitfield (1893); to Icthyocrinidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978), Webster and Webster (2012); to Flexibilia by Wright (2017); and to Sagenocrinida by Sepkoski (2002), Wright and Toom (2017).
