Taxonomy
Hamites reussianus was named by d'Orbigny (1850). It is the type species of Hyphantoceras, Hyphantoceras (Hyphantoceras).

It was recombined as Hyphantoceras roissyanum by Hyatt (1900); it was recombined as Hyphantoceras reussianum by Wright (1979) and Wilmsen and Nagm (2014); it was recombined as Hyphantoceras (Hyphantoceras) reussianum by Kennedy and Gale (2015).
