Episinus penneyi was named by García-Villafuerte (2006). Its type specimen is IHNFG-2895, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Mexican amber (IHNFG collection), which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Mexico.
