Loxomma rankini was named by Beaumont (1977). Its type specimen is GLAHM V2023, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Castlehill, near Carluke, which is in a Westphalian A terrestrial coal in the Lower Coal Measures Formation of the United Kingdom.
