Obruchevichthys was named by Vorobyeva (1977). Its type is Obruchevichthys gracilis.
It was assigned to Elginerpetidae by Ahlberg (1995); and to Elginerpetontidae by Clement and Lebedev (2014), Clack and Milner (2015).
