Taxonomy
Branchierpeton saalense was named by Werneburg (1990). It is not extant. Its type specimen is BGRB 9previously ZGI) P9/588, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Petersburg, near Halle, which is in a Stephanian terrestrial horizon in the Wettin Formation of Germany.
