Pharsophorus tenax was named by Ameghino (1897) [Original type was an isolated m1, now lost]. Its type specimen is AC 3004 (neotype), a mandible (dentary m2-4), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Pharsophorus lacerans by Patterson and Marshall (1978).
