Acanthothoraci was named by Stensiö (1944). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Acanthothoraciformes by Long (2011).

It was assigned to Placodermi by Denison (1975); and to Placodermi by Denison (1978), Dineley and Metcalf (1999), Sepkoski (2002), Young (2010), van der Laan (2019).
