Petrodus was named by McCoy (1848) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l C Mosc-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Petrodus patelliformis.

It was assigned to Selachii by Gunnell (1933); to Orodontidae by Hay (1902) and Jordan (1963); to Symmoriidae by Goto et al. (1988); and to Ctenacanthida by Sepkoski (2002).
