Mesiteia was named by Gorjanovic-Kramberger (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. It is not extant.
It was assigned to Scyllidae by Woodward (1889), Jaekel (1894); to Scylliorhinidae by Jordan (1963); to Orectolobidae by Cappetta (1975); to Orectolobiformes by Sepkoski (2002), Delsate (2003); and to Hemiscylliidae by Müller and Diedrich (1991), Carnevale et al. (2014).
