Parapalaeobates was named by Weiler (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp K Maes-l Sepkoski's reference number: 884].

It was assigned to Hypolophidae by Herman (1977); to Rhinobatoidei by Cappetta (1987); to Parapalaeobatidae by Zalmout and Mustafa (2001); and to Galeomorphii by Sepkoski (2002).
